Weather gloomy but mood relaxed.

A gloomy wet day so took a lazy start. Eventually wandered along river and devuded to walk across bridge to the other side of The Rhine. What a busy tiver it is. Apart from the long, low cruise boats there is a constant stream of vessels carrying containers and other goods. The view back to the city from the other side is quite pleasant.

There is something about St Martins Church that appeals. We had enjoyed some solence in their the night before and wanted to see the foundations in the crypt- a Roman training gym and swimming baths, onto wjich the first medieval church was built in the 12th century. There are about 85 churches in Cologne, but this one holds interest so we return. The clear distinction between Roman, Medieval and Modern is evident throughout!

Cologne needs little excuse for a dress up, a mask or a hat so New Year is a good excuse. We are fascinated by the array of costumes in the shops and also being worn. As we enter the Haemarchet our noses have a delucate line of black soot drawn on them - to bring us luck in the New Year. What a happy atmosphere in this place!

And of course we did have to go into the Cathedral. Yes, it was crowded. But visitors respectful. We sat quietly to absorb. There are just so many lines of thought, but the amazement is undoubted.
