I've hit a bit of a wall, so an 'easy ' day planned. Nobody said plans come to fruition! Feeling some confidence we catch the 'S' after a full breakfast at our hotel. We plan to revisit some sights we drove past yesterday. Firstly there is the 'Typography of Terror'. We have followed some of the cobblestones that now mark where The Wall once stood. The monument here is particularly poignant where a few hundred metres of wall has been left in original condition (minus some souvenired samples). It also stands adjacent to the site where SS, Gestspo and Nazi planning and activities took place up to and during WWII. It was heavily damaged by bombing near the end of the war and has now been appropriately razed to show only some foundations. Within the square stands a free museum with photographs during the various phases from 1930 onwards. A previous visit to Sachenhausen - a Concentration Camp in the region started thw process of recognising the horror that this exhibition somehow appropriately, if starkly affirms.
Not far away the site if Checkpoint Charlie in The Wall is also now replaced by Museums. It seems appropriate no remains can form a monument. The memorials are elsewhere.
We had booked for a classical concert performed by Berlin Chamber Orchrstra that night so back to hotel for a rest before travelling out to former West Berlin where we enjoyed a lovely meal. Nearby the venue for our concert- The Kaiser-Wilhelm Memorial Church. This amazing protestant (Lutheran) Chuch waz built to honor Wilhelm II. Its opulence was befitting a wealthy Prussian ruler, but during the war it was bombed. As it was seen to represent the social division that preceded the war (also cost), it was not restored. Instead the quite striking blue building was built as the church. It is in here that concerts are held. We thoroughly enjoyed a program that included well known pieces from Pachabel, Vivaldi, Handel, Bach, Puccini, Schubert, Beethoven, Mozart and Widor which included a soloist soprano, violinist and organist.
